Photography is all about improvisation.

No matter how well planned a photographer is, something is bound to change.

That was the case when I was assigned to an early morning shoot at a local bakery.

Pretty cut and dry assignment, I needed photos of the owner, workers and some detail shots of the space. I get there early in anticipation of setting up some lights and walk inside to realize that there is no way I am gonna get lightstands set up in the small area they had.

I most likely should have realized this before hand but I figured I would be able to get them up somehow.

Regardless I had to figure out a way to light this space better than the little bit of early morning ambient light coming through the front window. I ended up hand holding one of my old school SB-28s with a pocket wizard.

Although this is a technique I have used in the past I always prefer the consistency of a light stand over the shaky nature of my weak left arm. But I was happy with the ability to change lighting situations quickly and got the images I needed.

The image above was one of my favorites. It was one of the shots that I had hoped to make, and after what felt like forever (probably 10 minutes) a customer ordered something from the case and I was able to fire off two shots before she quickly retreated back to the cash register.

Mostly I am just glad to get up a blog post that isn't sports.
