Fear

February 03, 2014

Everyone gets scared.

Some people don't like scary movies, others can't stand the dark.

Me, I hate first assignments.

Last weekend I received a last minute assignment to go out and cover the Howard County Winter Cheerleading County Tournament.

After making sure I could fit the assignment in before the rest of the day's work I took the assignment and began researching.

I had never photographed cheerleading before, to be totally honest I have never even seen a competitive cheerleading competition.

I went and looked at every publication I could think of that would have covered cheerleading before in order to try to get an idea of how these events were run.

Working on familiarizing myself with correct cheerleading jargon and years of other photojournalist's documentation of competitions, I felt like I was ready.

With it being the first assignment of the day, I was able to get there extra early and get a feel of the environment.

Fortunately for me the gym was lit pretty well (thanks to the Nikon D4's noise handling).

Overall, I felt my take was good. Hoping to have the opportunity to photograph another next year.

Until next time, take care!
